After I placed all the joints, I aimed the joints so they point to each other. Then I put the character in T pose and saved the rig pose, still using the ART tools. Then I bound the skin, not using the ART tools this time. Instead I went to Rigging mode in Maya an then chose Skin→Bind skin and that's it. I like how the skeleton looks after skin binding, it has my favourite colour, rainbow!
